Information and Online Reviews
The hotel is situated just outside the old town, an scenic ten-minute walk (750 m) from the Plaza del Obradoiro and Santiago Cathedral. While accommodations in the old town offer the benefit of being in the heart of the action, they often come with limited vehicle access. Hotel Palacio del Carmen, however, provides the convenience of easy access by car and ample parking space.
Located just five minutes away on Rua das Galeras, you'll find a variety of restaurants, including Don Quijote, where we enjoyed one of our favorite dinners during our trip to Galicia.
As Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite members, we were upgraded to a beautiful deluxe room with a stunning view. And what a view it was! We could see Santiago de Compostela’s old town, including the Cathedral, right from our windows. Opening the curtains of the two large windows was a daily joy. The room, at 258 square feet, was spacious. The bed and bedding were super comfortable, complete with four pillows. The room featured an armchair with an ottoman, a good-sized TV, and a nice desk with a stylish chair. The dark wood floors were immaculate.
There was a large closet with a sizable safe, along with two plush bathrobes and slippers. The bathroom was spacious and tastefully decorated with small tiles, and it included a toilet, bidet, and a bathtub with a handheld shower. A large counter with two sinks, high-quality soap and shampoo, and fluffy towels completed the bathroom amenities. Complimentary high-quality natural mineral water and an espresso maker with capsules were also provided. The room included a thermostat for controlling the temperature, and it was always comfortable throughout our stay. The Wi-Fi, at 76 Mbps, was fast enough for streaming and reliable.
Overall, the room was a delight, offering plenty of natural light and modern comfort.
The hotel boasts excellent gastronomy, including a highly rated restaurant that we chose not to visit, as it was outside our budget for this already costly trip. However, we did opt for the breakfast during our stay, and at $50 for two guests, it was well worth it. Breakfast is served in a beautiful large room, overviewing the garden, full of natural light. The quality and variety of food were outstanding. Some of the highlights included a moist and delicious "tortilla de papas," high-quality cold cuts (including jamón serrano), cheeses, pastries, and made-to-order eggs—the omelette was particularly excellent. All of this was complemented by freshly made lattes from the self-serve espresso coffee maker. The service staff were incredibly friendly and competent, making the breakfast a culinary experience that energizes you for your day in Santiago or any day trips.
In terms of ambiance, the building was once a convent and is elegantly and tastefully decorated in Galician style. From Spanish-style chandeliers to comfortable sofas in the reception area, and a large park with beautiful trees and lawn, the common areas of the hotel excel in beauty and charm.
The hotel features a very nice saltwater pool, large enough for light swimming and relaxation. The workout area is small but adequately equipped with a good treadmill and a bike. For a hotel of this size, it could use an additional treadmill, but overall it is a pleasant space, and the equipment is of good quality.
One standout feature of the hotel is its indoor and outdoor parking with generously sized spaces, offering peace of mind and convenience for guests traveling by car. This is not a feature commonly found in European hotels, making it a notable perk for those -like us- exploring the region by vehicle.
We were greeted warmly upon arrival, with recognition of our status as Bonvoy Gold members. The staff was always ready to assist with helpful suggestions and made us feel welcome throughout our stay. Our room was kept sparkling clean each day. Overall, Galician hospitality at its finest.
Hotel Palacio del Carmen, Autograph Collection, truly delivers on all fronts, from its stunning views of Santiago de Compostela to the impeccable service and thoughtfully designed amenities. Our experience was marked by comfort, elegance, and the warmth of Galician hospitality. This hotel has earned a well-deserved five-star rating, and we proudly award it our Prestige Comfort seal from Trailblazing Adventures, recognizing its exceptional quality and attention to detail. Whether you're in Santiago for a pilgrimage, a cultural journey, or simply to relax, Hotel Palacio del Carmen offers an outstanding stay that blends historic charm with modern comforts.
Important Note and Methodology
We do not receive discounts or special treatment from the hotels that we review.
To help you align your expectations, we categorize hotels into four groups: budget, moderate, premium, and luxury, with each category roughly representing 25% of the price range from the least expensive to the most expensive in each market.
This way, we ensure that we're comparing apples to apples. A five-star budget hotel is not necessarily better than a four-star luxury hotel; it's all about managing expectations within each price category.
Different markets have different expectations, and we take these into account by comparing properties within the same price category for each market. For example, for a moderately priced hotel in Bangkok, I expect a pool on the premises; this is not the case in most American and European big cities.
In those rare cases where we find a hotel that we rate with a perfect five stars, we award the following medals according to each category: Budget: Good, Nice, and Affordable. Moderate: Exceptional Value. Premium: Comfort and Prestige. Luxury: Unforgettable Experience.
We believe that by following this methodology, we help our readers make more informed and satisfying travel choices.
