Pontevedra
Introduction
Pontevedra, located in the autonomous community of Galicia in northwest Spain, is a city with a rich history dating back to Roman times. It was founded in the 1st century AD as an important commercial port due to its strategic location on the Pontevedra estuary. Over the centuries, the city has witnessed numerous historical events, including the Reconquista and the rise of maritime trade during the Middle Ages. Among the many gems you will find in this city is the 16th-century Church of Santa María la Mayor, a magnificent example of late Gothic Galician architecture.
The city also has a deep connection with literature. Ramón María del Valle-Inclán, one of the most prominent writers in Spanish literature, was born in the province of Pontevedra and spent part of his life in the city. His works, which span from modernism to esperpento, often reflect the life and spirit of Galicia. The influence of Valle-Inclán is visible in various corners of the city, where his literary legacy is celebrated with statues and monuments.
Today, Pontevedra has transformed into a vibrant and youthful city, with a dynamic university community thanks to the presence of the University of Vigo’s Pontevedra campus. The city has been internationally recognized for its pedestrian-friendly and sustainable urban model, making it an ideal place to live and visit. Tourism is one of the main economic activities, with visitors attracted by its historical charm, beautiful squares, and cultural festivals.
Best Time to Visit Pontevedra
Pontevedra, located in the Galicia region, enjoys a warm Mediterranean summer climate. From a climatic point of view, the summer months, from June to September, offer warmer and drier weather. During these months, maximum temperatures usually range between 24°C (75 F) and 26°C (79 F) providing a pleasant environment to explore the city and its surroundings.
June to September: These months are ideal due to the warm weather and low rainfall. July and August are the hottest months, with temperatures reaching 26°C (79 F) 15and lows around 15°C (59 F) The chance of rain is quite low, especially in July and August, allowing for outdoor activities and local festivals without worries.
It is important to note that Galicia is known for its variable weather, where conditions can change rapidly from sunshine to rain within minutes.
High Tourist Season: During the summer, especially in July and August, Pontevedra attracts a larger number of tourists. The city's streets and squares fill with visitors, creating a lively and festive atmosphere; however, this also means that attractions can be more crowded, accommodation prices higher, and restaurants busier.
May and October: These months can also be good times to visit, although temperatures are slightly cooler and there is a higher chance of rain compared to the summer months. However, the city is less crowded with tourists, which can offer a more tranquil and authentic experience.
Winter and Early Spring: From November to April, the weather is cooler and wetter. Daily high temperatures range between 12°C (54 F) and 18°C (64 F), with January being the rainiest month. Although the weather may be less favorable, the city still offers its historical and cultural charm. One of Pontevedra's charms is its parks, which cannot be fully enjoyed in winter. If you choose to visit in winter, make sure to bring good rain gear.
We visited Pontevedra as part of our trip through Galicia in May. We were fortunate with the weather, aside from a few passing storms, and we could explore the city with fewer tourists. Nonetheless, it is a popular destination, and restaurants were full, and attractions were very busy.
Where to Stay
For a city with so much tourist appeal, there is not a large offer of hotels near the historic center. The two hotels with the best online reviews are the Parador de Pontevedra and the Hotel Rías Baixas.
Parador de Pontevedra: This hotel is located in a beautiful 16th-century Renaissance palace, offering its guests a unique experience that combines luxury and history. The Parador is located in the heart of the old town, allowing easy access to the city's main attractions. We stayed at this parador, as it is our favorite chain in Spain, always combining great service with accommodation in historic buildings. Check our review of the hotel right here.
Even if you don't stay at the Parador, we recommend the restaurant for dinner, offering excellent Galician cuisine, very good service, and an excellent selection of local wines.
Hotel Rías Baixas: Also located in the center of Pontevedra, this hotel is known for its comfort and customer service. It offers modern and well-equipped rooms, with easy access to shopping and tourist areas. In reviews, visitors especially appreciate its central location, friendly staff, and clean and comfortable facilities.
Both hotels fall within what we consider a moderate rate, with prices ranging between 90 and 120 euros depending on the time of year.
Walking Tour of Pontevedra
Our tour takes you through the city's main attractions. However, take your time to get lost in the streets of the historic center, which are a destination in themselves where you will always discover some hidden treasure. Link to map in google maps.
Igrexa de San Bartolomeu: This baroque church, built in the 17th century, is known for its impressive façade and richly decorated interior. The Church of San Bartolomeu is a magnificent example of Galician baroque style and a must-visit for lovers of religious architecture.
Municipal Market of Pontevedra: We are fans of local markets, and the Municipal Market of Pontevedra is a real delight. Here you will find many stalls selling fresh fish, with an impressive variety of seafood that reflects the richness of the Galician coast. The vibrant colors and bustling atmosphere make this market an authentic and memorable experience.
Ponte do Burgo: This historic bridge, dating back to the 12th century, is one of the oldest in the city and has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. Originally built by the Romans, the current bridge is a beautiful medieval structure that crosses the Lérez River, connecting the old town with the rest of the city.
Church of Santa María la Mayor: Built in the 16th century, this Gothic church is one of the most important monuments in Pontevedra. The main façade, with its detailed ornamentation and sculptures, is particularly notable. The church was declared a National Monument in 1931.
Tourist Office: Located in a stately building in the city center, the Pontevedra Tourist Office offers the service and attention characteristic of tourist offices in Spain. Here you can find a wealth of information about Pontevedra and its surroundings, including maps, brochures, and recommendations for events and activities.
Praza de España de Pontevedra: The City Hall of Pontevedra, located in the Praza de España, is a majestic building dating back to the 19th century. Designed by architect Alejandro Sesmero, construction began in 1876 and was completed in 1880. The building is a clear example of the eclectic style of the time, with a façade adorned with Ionic and Corinthian columns and an inscription paying homage to Teucer, the mythical founder of the city.
Ruins of San Domingo: The ruins of the San Domingo convent, built in the 14th century, are one of the most important medieval remains in the city. Although the convent was destroyed in the 19th century, the preserved ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into Pontevedra's architectural and religious past.
Parque das Palmeiras: This charming park is an oasis of tranquility in the heart of the city. If, like us, you visit in spring, the blooming camellias offer a spectacle of colors you cannot miss. It's a perfect place to rest in the shade of a tree before continuing with the tour.
Convent of San Francisco: Founded in the 13th century, the Convent of San Francisco is another notable example of religious architecture in Pontevedra. The convent has been restored, and its Gothic church, with its beautiful stained glass windows and high ceilings, is especially impressive.
Church of the Virgen Peregrina: This baroque church, built in the 18th century, is one of Pontevedra's symbols. Its scallop shell-shaped plan is unique and is dedicated to the Virgen Peregrina, patron saint of the province and the Portuguese Way of Saint James. It is a beloved place both by locals and pilgrims passing through the city on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
Plaza Méndez Núñez: The genius of Ramón María del Valle-Inclán is present in the streets of Pontevedra. In this plaza, with outdoor cafes, you will find his statue, paying homage to one of the greatest writers in Spanish literature. Just a few blocks away, you can find one of the houses where Valle-Inclán lived, adding a literary touch to your visit to Pontevedra. During his time in Pontevedra, Valle-Inclán published his first book, "Femeninas (Six love stories)" in 1894.
Gastronomy
Pontevedra's cuisine reflects its proximity to the sea and the rich culinary traditions of Galicia. Typical dishes of the region include a variety of fresh seafood and local products. Among the most notable are grilled octopus (pulpo), perfectly cooked with a touch of paprika and olive oil, and zamburiñas, small scallops often served au gratin or grilled.
Another emblematic dish is Galician beef tenderloin (solomillo de ternera), known for its tenderness and exceptional flavor, coming from cows that graze in the green Galician meadows. This cut of meat is prepared in various ways, always highlighting its quality and flavor. Order it “a point” to fully enjoy its flavor and texture.
We had the opportunity to taste some of these dishes at the excellent restaurant in the parador, Casa do Barón. The gastronomic experience at this establishment is unparalleled, combining Galician culinary tradition with first-class service and a charming historic ambiance.
Two breakfast recommendations. For a traditional Galician breakfast and excellent coffee we recommend Café Museo de Historia. For a more modern alternative Misto Café Bar has excellent gourmet breakfast dishes.
